The following tips will help you create effective tables to control your design.

The following tips will help you create effective tables to control your design.

1. Keep your HTML code easy to read.

The HTML code can sometimes become very complicated once you start adding the content to your tables. Images, alt tags and content text can soon create a myriad of encoding which is very difficult to follow. Try to keep your code easy to follow, using snippets of HTML comments to ensure that when you revisit or deploy your site, each section is clearly labeled.

2. Remove dead blank.

In your coding, remember to see the rows and eliminate the spaces between the elements. Some browsers will recreate these spaces if they remain after posting and this may alter the appearance of your design.

3. Center the tables.

When working with a fixed resolution table (such as 800 X 600), aligning the table in the center will keep your layout independent of the resolution changes and will ensure that its contents show as you planned.

4. Stacking your large tables.

All browsers must read the entire table code before the results can be displayed. Text that is outside the table will be displayed first. If you build a large table, this will seriously affect the download speed and increase the risk of the viewer leaving before the screen reaches the monitor.

To avoid this, construct several smaller tables. As you stack your tables, they will load independently and this will allow the viewer to read their contents from the first table while the remaining content downloads.

5. Nesting Tables

Nesting tables will also achieve controlled content viewing. You can display a complete table within a larger table cell. Both IE and Netscape support this format.
